Antique Lamps – A Renaissance Man

Ulysses Cantagalli, is recognised today as a major 19th century Italian potter. Hardly anything is known about him prior to 1878 when he is recorded as taking over the family factory in Florence.  Florence, of course, was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and Cantagalli’s early products reflect this Renaissance artistic style. The style, at the time, was in great demand, especially in England and English speaking countries in general.

An outstanding contribution to Cantagalli’s international success was his friendship with William de Morgan, Britain’s most talented and admired pottery and tile designer of the day.  de Morgan had captured the mood of the times and this, without doubt, was of greatest benefit to Cantagalli.

de Morgan greatly admired Cantagalli’s art and introduced him to many influential collectors in England and the US.  He encouraged him to participate in international exhibitions and in a short time Cantagalli’s works became highly regarded with his work still popular as collector’s items.

The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co illustrate a Cantagalli table lamp from their current collection.

A very decorative, 19th century, Italian majolica lamp from the Florentine workshop of Ulysses Cantagalli.  The urn shaped lamp in Italian renaissance style, with a dome shaped cover, the cover with a minaret finial.  The urn on a circular base and socle, standing on a square shaped base.  The lamp beautifully decorated in monochrome, pastel blue enamel.  The urn cover, rim and base with a lambrequin border.

The principal subject, a renaissance scholar with his dog.  The urn sides with moulded, lion head ring grips.  The figure subject deftly drawn in a very free flowing manner.  The lamp on a square, custom made base, lacquered in Royal Blue.

Of note, due to the ceramic firing technology of the day, the urn had slightly “sagged” in the kiln, hence the irregular angle of the majolica square base.

Circa 1880              Overall height (including shade) 23″/58.5cm

Cantagalli devoted his artistic energy to the understanding of the techniques and the designs of the old masters from Gubbio, Deruta, Urbino and other important Italian ceramic centres.  He was fascinated by the Italian pottery made during the Renaissance, and uncovered a natural talent which made it easy for him to revive the old decorative techniques.  Further, Cantagalli was also a very intuitive businessman and he knew that Renaissance style pottery was very popular at the time.

Ulysses Cantagalli was an outstanding ceramicist, whose original works are displayed in many private and important public museum collections including the Bargello in Florence, the Museo Stibbert also in Florence and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

After a long and successful life, Cantagalli died in 1901.  His wife and daughter continued to operate the factory in Florence until 1934 when the factory was sold to the former artistic director, Amerigo Menegatti.  The factory struggled through Italy’s disastrous involvement with the second world war, finally closing in 1985.

Public Speaking Style

The power of a good speech is almost unparallel to anything else, a good speech can make huge changes in societies, bring conflicts to an end and start revolutions. Maybe you are not interested in this kind of speech making, but a good speaker will have the ability to move any obstacle he wants on his way to making his point clearly understood. The speech making ability is not only something that is a gift, it is something that can be learned and acquired. Many look up to famous speakers to be their roll models and inspiration.

Some people may claim that people have become famous in public speaking simply because they have the confidence and knowledge enough to be so certain of their ideas within everybody’s hearing. Yes, public speaking could be a good combination of wit and self esteem. But have you ever given it a thought that even the famous public speakers were initially afraid of the stage itself?

Public speaking is not something that you are born with. It is something that you must develop. If, as a child, you were oriented that a speech in front of a couple of people is something you must be anxious of then you might find it hard to realize yourself in that very manner. However, if you have been trained to express your views without regard to what criticisms or opinions other people may throw at you, then you are sure to thread the path of confidence in speaking well publicly.

There are various types of public speakers though. And for each type of speaker is a specific technique of public speaking. There may be some general guidelines as to how to speak publicly but eventually it is the natural styles of the actual speakers that rule.

However, this does not negate the fact that this is also the pitfall for most public speakers. It is often hard to keep the audience laughing or to keep their attention on your speech. That’s why these things set famous and effective public speakers apart from those of the beginners.

Another effective style that most famous public speakers use is a light-but-bombarded-with-sense-speech. Too few can deliver this well since many tend to complicate words and have the tendency to stay off focus, especially when the speech is extemporaneous.

Light speeches are easy to digest. These also offer the advantage of driving to your purpose without having to divert your public’s attention to another thing which is prone to lead everyone to another issue.

Depending on the speaker, the style may be easy to spot. But this is not the core of listening to public speakers. It is not about knowing how one would deliver himself but how his delivery penetrates to your understanding.

Signs That a Man is Flirting With You

Would you like to know if a man is flirting with you? Sometimes it can be a little hard to tell if a man is flirting with you. It is much easier for men to know that a woman is flirting than for a woman to know that a man is flirting with her. However after reading this article you will look closely to all the men in your life and know instantly that he is flirting with you and that he is interested with you. There are several things that men do that suggest that they are flirting, for example if a man is interested in you and he would like to make you know he would look at you in the eyes for a longer time that is usual or normal. This way, he hoped to get your attention and that you will get what he is trying to communicate to you.

Men will also look at your eyes then your mouth, your chin and finally you body. If he does this there is no doubt he is flirting with you.

If a man keeps touching you for no reason at all, whether it is to smooth your dress or to get something off from it, you should know without a shadow of doubt that the man is flirting with you and that he is interested and maybe he would like to be your man. Every little chance he gets will be dedicated to trying to touch you. He could just want to pat you or tickle you. To him he is playing with you and hopefully you get the message that he would like the two of you to play together. So go right ahead and play along with him, touch him right back if you can. Encourage him along if you are also interested.

Watch out for a man who suddenly wants to look too clean and well groomed. This is a man in love and the man is flirting with you. He wants you to notice him and he is going to painfully look smart and well groomed for the rest of the time until you notice he is around then he can go back to being himself. You will notice that whenever he sees you all he is concerned about is that his tie is straight and his shirt is well tucked in. Do not let such man continue to painfully groom himself, save him from all the work and flirt with him and let him go back to his former self.

A man who is interested in you and flirting with you will definitely try to impress you. Such a man will come up with great jokes just to make you laugh. He will also come up with interesting stories. He knows if he comes out as a funny and interesting guy and to add it up with intelligence you will not help but fall in love with him. If the man is trying so hard to impress you the man is flirting with you, he would not be impressing you if he were not interested.
